Sailing Clubs & Dogs

Beer S.C.

Never took the dogs to Beer, but when I visited the club there was a dog on the balcony, so that was a good sign. The club house is a large wooden shed structure, which gives it a relaxed and informal feeling with friendly (probably the most friendly members I have ever come across) members - they treat me like a member and I have only sailed there once and they still e-mail me with news etc. Dogs are restricted from the beach on the left in the summer but can go to the right. Only a 4 star as there are no really great walks close by, but actually the pub on the other side of the road is OK with dogs, so maybe it should be a 5 star.

Starcross S.C.

Nice rural location, with allegedly good walks, unfortunately when we were there the weather wasn't very good so we didn't try them out. Some confusion over whether dogs were allowed in parts of the club house, no one was really sure, but they were allowed on the grounds at least. In the end they stayed in the car. Three stars on the assumption the walks are as good as they were described.

Lyme Regis SC

Active dinghy sailing club with friendly atmosphere. Dogs welcome in the club and around, but are restricted from the beach and slipways during the summer, also gets crowded on the promenade, so not really any good walkies, hence only the 4 out of 5 stars.

Axe Y.C.

Nice friendly club, with new club house, some local dinghy sailing. Dogs are allowed on the Axmouth part of the beach all year long, which is great. The Beach on the Seaton side only allows dogs in the winter. The club leave a dog water bowl out which is nice, but no dogs anywhere inside the club, so only a 2 and a half paws.

Upper Thames S.C.

Upper Thames is at Bourne End, another pretty Thames location. Plenty of nice walkies the other side, with a meadow with real cows in it! Allowed in the boat park on a lead, but again not in the Club. Now here is the big problem, the race office likes to shoot the first three boats with a 45 revolver. I guess there is some logic, like Martin Hunter is normally in the top three Raters, or it gets boring with the same helms winning all the time, however the race officer must be a bad shot as he always seem to miss. The problem is, not being a gun dog, the bang scares me sh**less, so to speak.

Cookham S.C.

Nice friendly Thames club, in a beautiful location for walkies in the meadow and towpath. Allowed in the car park and boat park, but I am afraid not in the club house at all, hence can only award this club 2 Paws

Banbury S.C.

Nice pond in the middle of some greenery. No one at the club seemed to know if I was allowed in or not, so it was cold and I came in, members were friendly and accommodating, although one muttered health and safety or something, so I didn't help out in the kitchen. Allowed in the car park and the boat park. I expect there might be some nice walkies, but I didn't go on any when I was there

Harlow and Blackwater S.C.

I have never been there, but have awarded this a 4 Paw rating based on the contribution from someone who may live in a shed in Essex, and may have some form of problem caused by carbon ingestion.
" You forgot Harlow Blackwater where I was their roving race reporter for a couple of years until getting the sack for writing race reports after downing two bottles of red and nobody could understand them, or so they said. Us dogs are allowed evrywhere except in the bar (but neither are smokers)and there are luverly long walks on the sea wall and rabbits to chase under the dinghies. Just have to watch out for the adders though.

And Harlow also run a dog throwing competition “dogs are allowed everywhere” but best landing dogs over the sea wall get less points than the ones that travel the furthest but you only get one go and the hose pipe is free. Lynn’s greyhound is brilliant due to the length of its legs. Wilf is not so good due to his ability to turn round in mid air.And all complaints to havedogwilltravel@themudsmine.org
Wilfy Wolf Woof the roving reporter "

Hampton S.C.

Hampton is on an Island on a pretty part of the Thames. No dogs allowed anywhere.

Rutland S.C.

OK, brilliant sailing water. No good for Dogs. Would you believe it, not only not allowed in the club, or the boat park, or the car park, but NOT EVEN allowed to sit in the car. Dogs don't bother, you are not wanted!!

Chichester YC

Top class club. Plenty of walks. Allowed in the 'wet' tea room, conservatory and bar. Really friendly members. Not allowed in the restaurant but that isn't a surprise. Plenty of nice walkies around the yacht basin.

Hamble River Sailing Club

Not bad from a doggy perspective. Balcony in front of the club we are allowed on. No problem in the car park or boat park. Bins to put my poo in. Apparently I am allowed into the bar when food isn't being served, but food was served all day when I was there. My owners can sit in the bar an watch me on the balcony.

Up the hill there is a nice common with walkies in the woods.
